宽容差不多成为社会的最高理想。然而，宽容本身是否为一个社会应该追求的最高理想呢 ？

过度高举宽容的社会文化演至末流会造成一种相对主义和“无可无不可”的文化。

如果宽容等于漠视真理，不顾道德，它即不再是一种德行，甚至变成了一种恶。为了避免被别人指责为不懂得宽容，人们干脆不去相信任何事。

我们变得宽容，因为我们不再确信任何事，没有清楚的是非观念不关心自己的立场，如此宽容反变成对确定信念的挑战，而不是植根于对别人尊严与品格的尊重。

更危险的是宽容文化造成的相对主义反过来最易激起不宽容，那些有自己坚定立场的人在相对主义怀疑主义的社会文化下往往被视为危险的少数，被推向社会的边缘，他们在社会特别容易感到威胁与不安。

有人认为多元主义的分解力量已经大得足以令社会解体，事实上，在现代社会里，我们能找到全体成员一致同意的道德原则已经“损之又损，以至于无”，再加上现行政党政治的操作方式，政党为了取得全体选民的支持，赢得选举，在策略上只能诉诸那些在道德上的“最小公分母”，一些重要的，具有争议性的价值因此没有机会被提出来在公共空间里辩论，加速了它们的灭亡。
